The project began with the challenge of preserving the existing structure while reimagining its layout and finishes through the lens of a refined mid-century modern aesthetic. The home’s bones naturally lent themselves to this design language, allowing us to open the main living space and introduce a custom floor-to-ceiling glass wall along the riverfront. This gesture created a seamless dialogue between indoors and outdoors, anchoring the design to its setting.
In the main living area, a ridge beam and continuous skylight eliminated the need for intrusive structural supports, enabling a low-profile ceiling pitch that emphasizes the home’s modernist proportions. Material selections were curated with equal precision: warm walnut paneling and cabinetry, rift- and quarter-sawn white oak across the floors and ceiling, and bespoke tilework with restrained detailing. Together, these finishes strike a balance of elegance, warmth, and restraint, producing distinct yet cohesive moments throughout the home.
Collaboration with the landscape architect extended this vision outward, drawing visitors into thoughtfully designed exterior spaces that blur the boundary between house and site.
Working within the constraints of the existing structure introduced considerable challenges—uneven foundations and structural irregularities demanded extensive repair and exacting craftsmanship. Yet, this high level of construction precision ultimately allowed the architectural details to shine, ensuring the finished home fully embodies the clarity and timelessness of mid-century modern design.
